<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Other">As a developing country, Guyana has faced and overcome many obstacles to its economic development and this holds especially true for the agricultural sector. The rice industry of Guyana is one of the main contributors to the nation's GDP and has encountered many obstacles relating to trade, management, globalization, and strategic development.
This paper intends to achieve the following: 1) ascertain the reasons for the initiation of the rice industry in Guyana; 2)identify the institutions that have shaped the industry; 3) determine the reason for the changing farmer demographics; 4)identify the key trade agreements in Guyana's history; and, 5) evaluate the shortcomings of the current policies and strategies aimed at the development of the rice industry.
Based on the exposition of historical and current events and policies in Guyana, the following conclusions were drawn. The prolonged crisis faced by the sugar industry during the period 1884 to 1904 was the key factor that established rice production as a major contributor to the colonial economy. The main institutions that shaped the early rice industry were the Guyana Rice Milling and Marketing Authority (GRMMA), Guyana Rice Export Board (GREB) and the National Paddy and Rice Grading Centre (NPRGC). The change in farmer demographics was triggered by globalization and liberalization and by the efforts of the Burnham government to correct the historical disparity between African and East Indian ownership of land. As a member of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) group of countries, the most noteworthy trade agreements have been made for supply to EU markets, and other countries through the Cotonou, CARICOM and the PetroCaribe agreements. The current government strategy for developing the agricultural sector is the """"AGRICULTURE - ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL PROSPERITY"""" strategy, however, this strategy neglects the improvement of the rice supply chain and granting financial incentives to the farmers.</datacite:description>
