The purpose of using such materials was to encourage .rst-year Japanese college learners to become critical and insightful in acquiring their own English, which is crucial in helping them develop their sense of values and philosophy of life. To this end, they were encouraged to engage in self-dialogue and self-reflection through the videos that highlight maturity in adulthood, such as social responsibility and good citizenship. Specifically, these videos were employed so that the students struggled to acquire specific vocabulary and logical communication skills necessary for explaining clearly how they should be able to establish their individual life goals and the values during their college days. A Japanese book focusing on campus-life issues among contemporary Japanese youths was also used to supplement the videos.
