The word ''FUMOTO'' means, literally, ''the skirt of a mountain'', was the name given to the main residential settlement of the Samurai under the administration area called ''ToJou''. This paper seeks to establish the fact that one system was used for the determining the direction of streets. The streets were determined with their direction based on two geometrical places. One of the geometrical places was, perhaps, the old castled mountain where one could look down on the residential area. The other was, probably a significant LandMark such as mountains surrounding the ''FUMOTO'' settlement. We were able to establish the sesimilarities in several ''FUMOTO'' towns.}, pages = {209--238}, title = {島津藩における麓集落に関する研究 : 街路設計手法について}, volume = {33}, year = {1991} }
