 note = {日本の英語学界では,サピアは共時的な記述言語学者としてよりもdrift(駆流)という用語とその概念に象徴されるように歴史的研究の論述中で言及されることが多いようである。しかし,サピアの言語史論とサピアの提唱したdrift(駆流)という用語とその概念は正しく読み解かれていないようである。サピアのLanguage(『言語』)という本は大部な本でもなく,とりわけ難しい専門用語を駆使しているわけではないが,サピアの言語史観を理解していないと読解は難しい。サピアは,言語の歴史を,第7章,第8章,第9章の三章を通じて一貫した言語史観で,非常に綿密に考え抜かれた緻密な構成で,音韻,形態,借用,類推,そして音声のパタンと形態のパタン,drift(駆流)といった用語,概念を,緊密に重層させ,繰り返し織り込んで巧みに言語の歴史の本質を論じている。第7章と第8章を,例えば,driftだけに焦点を絞って読めばそれなりに理解できるであろう。また,第9章を,「言語接触」だけに焦点を絞って読めば,古今東西の諸言語間に見られる相互影響をそれなりに把握できるであろう｡しかし, これらの三つの章は, 言語の歴史をいろいろな側面から観察するための方法が緊密に繰り返し織り込まれていて, サピアの一貫した言語史観の総体を漏らすことなく把握することは容易ではない｡そのためか, 言語の歴史的考察を述べた第7章, 第8章, 第9章という三つの章でサピアが意図したことは正確に理解されていない｡本稿の目的は, サピアが言語の歴史に関して論じている, 第7章, 第8章, 第9章の三つの章を読み解くことにより, サピアの言語史観の真相を探り, サピアの歴史的研究の原理を明らかにすることである。, This paper is an attempt to examine the Sapir's view on the language contact, particularly referring to
the chapter 9 of E. Sapir's Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech (1921).
Sapir expounds his view on the history of language in chapter 7, 8 and 9. He explains historical characteristics
of one particular language, i.e. English, in chapter 7, and those of two relative languages, i.e. English
and German, and finally the universal features noticeable in all human languages in chapter 8. In chapter 9, the final chapter with regard to the historical study of language, Sapir gives his view on
the problems of the language contact (=borrowing). Borrowing from foreign languages has been regarded as
one of the so-called three methods in the nineteenth century historical-comparative linguistics: i.e., sound
change, analogy and borrowing. Sapir, however, insists that borrowing has nothing but secondary significance
in comparison with the other two methods, because foreign elements are borrowed only if such elements are
adjusted to the target language, while the other two methods, i.e. sound change and analogy are always and
unrestrictedly active and ready to work.},
