It was found that the extraction of nickel sulfide was enhanced by the bacterium. Adapted and non-adapted strains were used in the leaching experiments. The former was repeatedly cultured to increase its resistance to nickel ion. The adapted strain gained energy from nickel sulfide rather than from ferrous ion in the presence of these two substrates.
