Each phage has a strict host\nspecificity. The phages varied considerably in particle structure and size ; the phage heads were\npolyhedral with tails varying in length between 10 and 135 nm. Three phages of them have a\nshort tail, six have a long and noncontractile tail, and three have a tail of complex structure\nwith a contractile sheath. They also differed from serologic reactions. They were stable phages\nwith double-stranded DNA as genetic material. These phages may provide a rapid and sensitive\nmeans of differentiating V.fischeri strains.
