The reason may be found in the fact that the book is apparently written in an easy style and every\nday English, quite unlike other books and papers on linguistics, and complex technical terms are hardly found\non any page of the book. Such terms as pattern and drift are often used in everyday life. Other words such as\nAblaut and Umlaut are those which any student who begins to study comparative and historical linguistics\ncannot fail to meet in their first lessons. However that is the very reason we are apt to miss Sapir’s thoroughlythought-\nout view on the method of historical linguistics.
