On the other hand, poetry of Stéphane Mallarmé, a representative poet of France, is said to be rich in musicality, and it is well known that he was influenced by Poe’s poetical works.\nIn this paper, it is not the direct influence Mallarmé received from“ The Devil in the Belfry” that I deal with. Rather I demonstrate the elements in Mallarmé’s comment that can explain“ The Devil in the Belfry.” Especially I focus on linguistic features of their musical poetry, and its musical effect and dissonance.\nFirst, in Chapter1, I read and understand“ The Devil in the Belfry” focusing on rhythm of the clock and tempo of dance. Next, in chapter 2, I examine the influence of Poe on Mallarmé.
