PURPOSE/METHODS: In order to better understand what topics or skills are regarded as important for rural nursing in the United States, we conducted a content analysis of textbooks used in undergraduate education. RESULTS: The results revealed that there were many descriptions of the recipients of nursing care, and that emphasis was placed on understanding minorities, who are at high risk of falling through the cracks in the healthcare system. The problems of isolation and anonymity, and the challenges of practicing in a small community are common to nurses in rural areas regardless of the country. CONCLUSION: Rural nurses need to have an understanding of the unique characteristics of minorities, and be highly skilled at keeping them connected to the healthcare system and supporting their health.
