The schools have often been criticized for ignoring various singing styles of shimauta, the original meaning of which is “village songs”. However, there is no place to hand down the shimauta tradition outside of the schools. This requires a positive reevaluation of the role of shimauta schools.\nThis paper focuses on the method of Tsuboyama Yutaka who tried to adopt the elements of uta-asobi in his school by encouraging his pupils to sing in their own style, rather than imitating his.
