Although asynchronous remote learning in general has some advantages and features that are not found in synchronous remote learning or in-person classes, it has been underestimated and only recently been actively promoted in Japan. One of the reasons for this is that in the situation of an unavoidable shift to remote learning due to COVID-19 outbreaks, there has been a strong desire for communication to be as close to“ real” as possible. In addition, in the context of Japan, online communication has long been negatively evaluated and accused as a cause of weakening human relationships. This paper attempts to overcome such tendency of avoiding the asynchronous online communication and focuses on its positive aspects. To address this concern, this paper provides an actual example of student interaction observed in an asynchronous COIL class conducted between Kagoshima University in Japan and Burapha University in Thailand.
