Results of a case study performed in the ‘US’ Primary School District in Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture can be summarized in the following five points.\n　First, in rural areas, the residents’ organization in village, so called Jichikai is mainly engaged on agricultural land conservation relying on non-farm house holders’ participation. Secondly, the farmer's group belong in ODMs contribute to the enhancement and strengthening of the agricultural land conservation activities of the Jichikai. Thirdly, however, in small vi llages with few households, ODMs are replacing their above activities while cooperation of agricultural land conservation between villages is hard to be expected. Fourth, the ODMs activity area is divided by the territory of the respective villages, therefore there can be inefficiency for largescale farmers.
