Although it has previously been regarded as a junior synonym of Labracinus cyclophthalmus (Müller and Troschel, 1849), L. ocelliferus differs from L. cyclophthalmus in having a higher count of scale rows on the cheek [13–15 (modally 14) vs. 11–13 (13) in the later], and numerous black spots (one spot each body scale) on the entire lateral surface of the body (vs. spots restricted to dorsal half of body or anterodorsal body).
