And then we estimated the microbial fertility of the seawater at the stations by the distribution pattern of them.\nThe results obtained were as follows:\n1) The range of the number of bacterial cells per ml of every seawater sample was from a few to eighty. The data suggest that the experimental region is oligotrophic zone.\n2) Bacteriophage systems were most abundant in the photosynthetic zone near 50 m depth in vertical distribution, although the distribution of bacterial cells was dependent on the stations.\n3) Microbial population was more abundant at St. 4 and St. 6 near Hozan Sone and at St. 8 in East China Sea than at other stations.
