This paper examines the structure of the central areas of these cities. In order to evaluate the function of these areas, their centrality was measured quantitatively based on the number of employees in 10 industrial sectors that represent urban centre function taken from the Chinese 2010 national population census. An attempt is then made to simulate service areas of each city. Using centrality indicators, it was found that the urban district of Chengdu had the highest centrality followed by the urban district of Chongqing. Within the Sichuan area, the urban districts of Shuangliu County, Dujiangyan City, Pengzhou County, and Chongzhou County all within the jurisdiction of Chengdu were measured to have high centrality. Within the Chongqing area, the second most centralised following the urban district of Chongqing is Wanzhou.
