After\nthe invasion in China in the early 1930s, trade-oriented nanshin (southward advancement) policies gradually\ngained aggressiveness, as the military began to influence making foreign policies. Behind this change, nanshin-ron\n(southward advancement theory) advocates provided ideological justification for the Japanese territorial expansion\nin the South Seas. In these circumstances, Japanese settlers in Papua and New Guinea were put in a peculiar\nposition: the emergence of militaristic Japan probably stimulated their patriotism but it also endangered their\npresence because they were in the colony of Australia-the nation that traditionally feared invasion from the north.\nHowever, as the Australian government continued to restrict Japanese migration, numerically their presence\nbecame marginal. But, unproportional to their population, economically they prospered and consolidated their\nstatus as ’masters’(although not quite equal to their white counterparts) in the Australian colonial apparatus. In this\npaper, I shall analyse how this unique presence of the Japanese settlers developed, examining its relations with the\nJapanese expansion in the South Seas and the Australian policies that tried to counter the expansion.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_6_publisher_23":{"attribute_name":"公開者・出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"鹿児島大学","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"},{"subitem_publisher":"Kagoshima University","subitem_publisher_language":"en"}]},"item_6_source_id_7":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"09160752","subitem_source_identifier_type":"PISSN"}]},"item_6_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"NII書誌ID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN10088628","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_6_subject_15":{"attribute_name":"NDC","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"210","subitem_subject_scheme":"NDC"}]},"item_6_version_type_14":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Iwamoto, Hiromitsu","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2016-10-27"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"iwa.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"193.8 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"iwa.pdf","objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://ir.kagoshima-u.ac.jp/record/3204/files/iwa.pdf"},"version_id":"d71ebee8-b564-487c-a266-769ce2b2f62c"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"inter-war period","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Japanese settlers","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Papua and New Guinea","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"nanshin","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Australia","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"journal article","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"Japanese Southward Expansion in the South Seas and its Relations with Japanese Settlers in Papua and New Guinea, 1919-1940","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Japanese Southward Expansion in the South Seas and its Relations with Japanese Settlers in Papua and New Guinea, 1919-1940","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"6","owner":"18","path":["5592","34"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2010-10-07"},"publish_date":"2010-10-07","publish_status":"0","recid":"3204","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Japanese Southward Expansion in the South Seas and its Relations with Japanese Settlers in Papua and New Guinea, 1919-1940"],"weko_creator_id":"18","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2024-02-26T00:35:22.841278+00:00"}
