The Si/Al ratio did not affect on the surface area nor the crystallinity. However, the acidity of the zeolite decreased with an increasing ratio of Si/Al. The acid strength distribution of the zeolite was compared with those of amorphous silica-alumina and HY type zeolite. The results indicate that HZSM-5 has many strong acid sites which could be effective for the disproportionation of aromatic hydrocarbons. An o-xylene isomerization reaction was carried out for the HZSM-5 zeolites in a fixed type reactor. The catalytic activity of the zeolites was greater than that of amorphous silica-alumina, but no activity difference was observed among the different zeolites. Unlike the isomerization over silica-alumina catalyst, 1, 2, 4- and 1, 3, 5- trimethybenzenes could not be detected in the product streams.
