Automobile manufacturers currently face the need to make major changes due to the global oil shortage and environmental considerations of carbon dioxide emissions, the pollution problem caused by nitrogen compound emissions, etc. As a result, hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) are emerging. The transition from the internal combustion engine vehicles to next-generation car has been slow, mainly because of the expensive sales price. Automobile manufacturers have been striving to achieve a sales price reduction of next-generation vehicles. However their spread is still slow, possibly because companies are only dropping the base, pre-tax price of the next-generation vehicles. Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan already have been launched the electric cars, the i-MiEV in 2009, and the LEAF in 2010 respectively. However their actual sales are far below original predictions. One of the most recent releases is the MIRAI, a fuel cell vehicle (FCV) produced by the Toyota Motor Corporation in 2015. Will this FCV from Toyota face the same fate as the i-MiEV and Leaf? No doubt its sales future will depend heavily on product innovation by its makers. This leads into the question of what overall role does the automobile play within today’s global infrastructure.
