However, subsequent studies have revealed that HGF has various physiological activities such as mitogen, motogen, morphogen and angiogen to most of epithelial and endothelial cells. Thus, HGF is now known as a broad-spectrum and multifunctional cytokine involved in a variety of physiological processes, including tissue development, regeneration and wound healing. In this review, a history how HGF was discovered is described.
