A fundamental plan for preservation and maintenance of Shibushi Castle by the local government of Shibushi City is now under construction. There are steep Shirasu slopes which were previously dry moats in Shibushi Castle. The problem from the viewpoint of the geotechnical engineering is how to preserve and to maintain Shirasu slopes in safety. In this paper a method to stabilize Shirasu slopes is proposed, where Diplazium subsinuatum is selected as the vegetation to cover the slope surface and to protect the erosion due to rainfall.
