The isolated phages differed greatly in the fine structure of the virion,\nplaque morphology, spectrum of lytic\naction, stability and one-step growth characteristics. At the same time, They had identical\nserological properties. Based on the phage properties, they were classified in five groups,\nGroup I phages consisted of an elongated hexagonal head and a tail of complex structure\nwith a contractile sheath. The phages of groups II, IV and V had a head with a hexagonal\noutline and tail with a contractile sheath. Group III phages exhibited a hexagonal head with\na unique short tail. In the five groups, The phages belonging to group III formed the largest\nclear plaque, were unstable to heating at 50°C for 30 min. and adding chloroform, and\nshowed the shortest of latent period.
