In this study we found that extracellular histones triggered platelet aggregation, leading to thrombotic occlusion of pulmonary capillaries in mice. These mice displayed signs of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), including thrombocytopenia, prolonged prothrombin time, decreased fibrinogen, fibrin deposition\nin capillaries, and bleeding symptoms.
