Several studies on aspects of Philippine Catholicism (or folk Catholicism)\nhave been published, however no overall ethnographic study of church-centered\nreligious life at a specific community has yet to be done. The present study is an attempt to describe the structure of a rural parish, and annual-cycle religious ceremonies centered around the parish church. The field research for the present\nstudy was conducted at the Town of Majayjay (The Parish of St.Gregory the Great),\nLaguna, from October, 1980 to September, 1981. Catholics comprise 93.8 per cent\nof the town's population of 12,316 (1970).\nThe geographical and demographic boundary of the parish is the same as that\nof the town. The parish has its own patron saint, St.Gregory the Great, church\nand parish priest. All of the church-centered religious activities except barrio\nfiesta are basically poblacion-limited affairs. This indicates that the barrio residents outside the poblacion generally have little concern with church-related affairs. They maintain more indigenous and traditional ways of expressing their belief.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"},{"subitem_description":"The population of the poblacion, composed of four barrio, and nearby areas\nin Majayjay, is about 7,000. They could be roughly classified into four groups\naccording to their degree of participation in church-centered religious activities: (1)\nabout 30 extremely active members composed of leading officers of the Parish\nCouncil and lay organizations, and extremely frequent church-goers, most notably\nwomen called manang, or devout Catholics who attend mass and novena almost\neveryday; (2) about 1,200 (including 30 of the above group) who attend mass once\nevery week either on Saturday or Sunday; (3) people who participate only in special\nchurch activities during Christmas, Town Fiesta and Holy Week. The number of\nthis group is estimated to be around 1,400; and (4) people who seldom or never\nparticipate in any church-centered religious activities.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"},{"subitem_description":"At present the parish has 11 lay organizations which are member organizations of the Parish Council. They vary in terms of recruitment, member-qualifications,\nprogram of activities, and the degree and scope of commitment to church affairs.\nSome of them like Samahang Pagkakaisa, Samahang Corazon de Jesus, and Samahang Damayan are only found in Majayjay while the rest were organized as branches of\nnation-wide or world-wide Catholic lay organizations. Several of them, being\nassigned to prepare for specific feasts and devotions, play an important role in\nmobilizing people to church-related activities.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"},{"subitem_description":"Since the leadership of the parish priest over the parish is quite limited due to\nthe secularization of the society, several lay leaders most of whom are officers of\nthe Parish Council, manage the parish. The parish currently faces a number of\nproblems, the most serious of which are effects of the securalization trend among\nthe parishioners, and the penetration of non-Catholic Christian churches into the\nparish, most notably, the Igelsia Ni Cristo. Against this background, and in accordance with recommendations provided by the reforming Second Vatican Council,\nlay leaders have attempted to re-establish what they consider a \"true\" Catholic community.\nThese attempts are directed at (1) strengthening the role of the Parish\nCouncil; (2) re-evaluating various religious and/or church-related practices, and\nconscientizing the general Catholics in terms of the Gospel and their social commitment;\nand (4) holding regular mass at several barrio outside the poblacian where\nno mass have ever been heard regularly in order to expand opportunities for barrio\nresidents to attend church-related ceremonies.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"},{"subitem_description":"The annual Catholic ceremonies observed in and around the church are prescribed and given respective meanings by the Ecclesiastical Calendar of the Roman\nCatholic Church. These ceremonies are in most part accepted as the community's\nsocio-cultural events in which the community's identity is expressed. It was found out that activities of the Holy Week, Christmas and the Town Fiesta attract more\npeople than any other occasions. Moreover non-official activities associated with\nthe official Catholic ceremonies seem to attract more people than official ceremonies\nthemselves. Examples of these non-official occasions are simbang-gabi, pabasa ng\npasyon, Santakruzan and many others.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"},{"subitem_description":"The following three aspects were observed as distinctive characteristics of\nFilipino Catholics' religious life in and around the church; (1) Statue complex which\nis apparent in the forms of devotions, in various processions and at private houses\nwhere the statues of the family's patron saint, etc. are diplayed in the family altar.\nIn many cases these statues are regarded as members of the family, and powerful\nbeings who will help an individual in case assistance is needed; (2) Emphasis on\nChrist's birth and death. This shows that Christ is accepted basically as an innocent\nchild, and as dying Christ. The resurrection of Christ and the succeeding Pentecostal\naffairs which are central to Catholicism are less significant to the majority of Filipino\nCatholics, if not totally neglected; and (3) Marian devotions which are popular\namong Catholics under the influences of Latin Catholicism are also prevalent in\nthe Philippines.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_7_publisher_23":{"attribute_name":"公開者・出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"鹿児島大学","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"},{"subitem_publisher":"Kagoshima University","subitem_publisher_language":"en"}]},"item_7_source_id_7":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"03895351","subitem_source_identifier_type":"PISSN"}]},"item_7_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"NII書誌ID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN00181784","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_7_subject_15":{"attribute_name":"NDC","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"160","subitem_subject_scheme":"NDC"}]},"item_7_version_type_14":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"寺田, 勇文","creatorNameLang":"ja"},{"creatorName":"TERADA, Takefumi","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"110166","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2016-10-28"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"AN00181784_v4-1_p19-79.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"60.7 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"AN00181784_v4-1_p19-79.pdf","objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://ir.kagoshima-u.ac.jp/record/8182/files/AN00181784_v4-1_p19-79.pdf"},"version_id":"30145889-6a2d-4bad-afdd-8172a5c59250"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"フィリピン南タガログ地方農村部の宗教生活 : カトリックの年中行事を中心に","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"フィリピン南タガログ地方農村部の宗教生活 : カトリックの年中行事を中心に","subitem_title_language":"ja"},{"subitem_title":"A Study of Religious Life in a Southern Tagalog Rural Community in the Philippines","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"7","owner":"18","path":["5382","94"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2015-06-09"},"publish_date":"2015-06-09","publish_status":"0","recid":"8182","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["フィリピン南タガログ地方農村部の宗教生活 : カトリックの年中行事を中心に"],"weko_creator_id":"18","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2024-06-24T08:43:46.825693+00:00"}
