An educational\npurpose of using this approach was to help the\nstudents develop their character through selffocused\nmaterials and tasks in both their mother\ntongue (i.e., Japanese) and a foreign language (i.e., English). It aimed to have the learners\nacknowledge the importance of language use\nto describe themselves, including their sense of\nvalues, way of thinking, and college life goals.\nTo this end, they were encouraged to work on\nthe development of self-identity and maturity\nof spirit. Several unique materials and tasks,\nincluding the use of a Japanese book focusing\non issues on contemporary Japanese college\nstudents, were employed so that the learners could identify their campus life and future liferelated\nproblems and manage to solve them\non their own. A final goal was to enable them\nto explain the change of their way of thinking,\nlearning attitudes, and learning strategies with\nclear logic and solid content in one paragraph\nwriting in English. A pedagogical challenge,\ntherefore, was how successfully the author\nas the facilitator (not as the instructor) could motivate them to work on process-oriented,\nlearner-centered, and self-regulated strategic\nlanguage learning practices. Overall, positive\nresults from several questionnaires were\ngained for this teaching method, including\nthe employment of the Japanese book and\nself-reflective learning processes.
