Thirteen seven women patients with unilateral THA were participated in this study. We measured leg muscle strengths (hip abductor, hip extensor and knee extensor), function of the hip joint, ipsilateral hip pain, ambulation ability. Compared with pre-operation, ipsilateral hip abductor strength were decreased at 1 week after surgery, and increased at 3 weeks after surgery. Hip extensor and knee strength of affected side also decreased at 1 week after surgery. Hip and knee muscle strengths of affected limb were significantly decreased compared with that of non-affected limp after surgery. Hip functions were improved from early phase. A gait speed was decreased at 1 week and improved at 7 weeks after surgery. Our results indicated that it was required a long terms to get a significant recovery of hip or knee muscle strength in affected limb and pain reduction influenced recovery of hip or knee muscle strength and improvement of the ambulation ability after
