As a social welfare state, Denmark guarantees life security for all its citizens by providing extensive public assistance, as well as free education, medical care, and long-term care. On the other hand, social welfare services are centralized under the law of social services. This law stipulates that the elderly should live at home to the extent possible. Moreover, based on the three principles of the elderly (i.e., respect for self-determination, use of own resources, and maintain continuity), a high quality of life is possible among community-dwelling elderly through various types of support, such as 1) help to self-help,  2) promotion of rehabilitation, use of welfare technology, and 4) informal services by NGOs and volunteers.
