It focuses on structural patterns in reading passages. A pilot study of structural patterns in CSAT reading passages was conducted by Shin Myung-shin (1999) who analyzed CSAT (1997, 1999) for thirteen structural patterns. The patterns were based on studies of reading comprehension in Paulston & Bruder (1976), and Nuttall (1996). These patterns were considered essential for Korean college students to successfully understand reading passages in English classes at college level. In light of this study, the present study analyzes the reading passages of NCUE (1999, 2000) in Japan and compares the results with Sin Myung-shin's findings. Results of the analyses did not find significant differences in the distribution of the structural patterns, but there were some crucial differences between NCUE (1999, 2000) and CSAT (1997, 1999). For example, some structural patterns appearing in NCUE, such as 'complexity in subordinate conjunctions', and 'participial construction' introducing 'time' and 'reason', did not appear in CSAT. More importantly, there was significant difference in the total number of reading paragraphs between NCUE and CSAT. There was no significant difference in the total number of vocabulary items in the reading passages. Pedagogical implications of the findings are discussed to conclude this study.}, pages = {43--57}, title = {韓国修学能力検定試験は果たして妥当な読解力テストか? : 大学センター入試(1999,2000)の読解構文パターンと韓国修学能力検定試験(1997,1999)との比較分析}, volume = {54}, year = {} }
