Pressure drop, particle hold-up and concentration profiles were measured in a circulating fluidized bed with a 10 cm I.D. riser to study the hydrodynamic behavior of binary mixture systems containing particles of different density. The equi-sized particles of silica sand and iron ore were used as the lighter and heavier materials of the bed in the experiments, respectively. Concerning the pressure drop and the degree of solids mixing, the following results were obtained; (1) A modification of an existing correlation for the pressure drop in mono-component particulate systems can be applied to mixtures of particles differing in density. (2) The downward flow of particles appears to be closely related to segregation phenomena. |
