| 内容記述 | This paper deals with girls’ education through the Victorian magazine, Atalanta, which targeted middle class unmarried women. This magazine made its first appearance in 1887 at a time when the imbalance of the population between men and women had become so serious. Women who were unable to find marriage partners had to seek other ways of life by themselves. The editors aimed to make Atalanta a guide for women who were trying to find jobs. This paper explains the magazines issued from October 1887 to September 1893, for they were edited by Meade, a famous author in those days. The paper consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 treats the social circumstances which had an influence on the policy of the editors of Atalanta. Chapter 2 concentrates on the characteristic figures of the magazine, “Atalanta Scholarship and Reading Union” and “Brown Owl”, connected with “Atalanta Letter-Bag”. In Chapter 3, Japanese women who appear in this magazine are focused on. Two stories about Japanese women are in the magazine, and a letter from Taki in Tokyo appears in ‘Brown Owl’. Through the investigation, the lives of Japanese women in comparison with those of British are brought to light. | |||||

| 内容記述 | 10代から20代前半の中流階級女性層を読者のターゲットとした雑誌『アタランタ』がイギリスで創刊された1887年当時は，ヴィクトリア朝の後期にあたる。雑誌や新聞などの定期刊行物が花盛りであったこの時代に，『アタランタ』は，文芸雑誌として高い評判を得た。それは，「女余り現象」が顕著となった時代を生きるため，自立と自活を目指す女性たちを導いていこうとする編集者の意が，この雑誌の質の高い内容に表れているからである。そこで本稿では2008年から2010年にかけて復刻版として出版された６年分の雑誌『アタランタ』について検証を加え，どのような雑誌であったのかを明らかにする。 第１章「ヴィクトリア時代と『アタランタ』」では，時代背景と女子教育という側面から『アタランタ』の編集方針やその役割を探る。 第２章「『アタランタ』の中の特徴的な企画」では，この雑誌の内容から特徴的な２つの記事であるスカラーシップ・コンペティションと，ブラウン・アウルとレター・バッグを取り上げる。読者の教養を高め，意見の形成を意図したこれら２つの記事の内容を考察対象とする。第３章「『アタランタ』にみられる日本」では，雑誌の中に描かれる日本を取り上げる。ミードが編集者として携わった６年間の『アタランタ』には，日本人を物語の中心に据えた２作品が含まれている。イギリス本国に住む読者に，日本を紹介する意図があったこの２つの作品に書かれた内容からは，当時の日本人の様子やイギリス人の日本人に対する印象が浮かび上がる。また，ブラウン・アウルで採用された東京に住む１人の日本人女性「タキ」の投書からは，時代の牽引力となった中流階級の女性の生き生きとした様子がうかがえる。そこで当時の新聞や資料を基にして，タキの人となりや育ってきた家庭環境などを検証し，若き「アタランタ」の姿を明確にする。 | |||||
