The area has been inhabited by the Celts since about the 5-7th century. They gave the region a Celtic language which remains in the western part. In the middle of the 19th century, Brittany experienced a revitalization of traditional culture with the discovery and widespread collection of folk songs. In the 1950s, Loeiz Ropars adapted the fest-noz , a \"night party\" in rural communities and set the stage for the folk revival. Since the 1970s, Breton music has been modernized and adapted into folk-rock and other fusion genres through the influence of Alan Stivell. Now it is very popular even outside the region. Large-scale Celtic festivals are held in the summer in towns around the region.
