内容記述 1. Inorganic salt requirements of 113 strains of bacteria from the sea (100 strains from sea water and 13 strains from the surface of fresh fishes) were investigated. In addition 37 strains of terrestrial bacteria and 14 strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus were employed in the experiments. 2. These micro-organisms showed different mineral requirements. This was demonstrated in experiments with a basal medium (pH 7.6) which contained only 0.05 per cent of peptone and 0.01 per cent of yeast extract as organic matter (see Fig. 2 and Tables 3 and 4). 3.Many strains from sea water were able to grow in artificial sea water media with a salt concentration ranging from 0.5 to 12 per cent. In the majority of the strains, the salt concentration optimum for growth was found to be 5 to 7 per cent. Terrestrial bacteria, on the other hand, showed a moderate growth without any supplement of inorganic salts to the basal medium, and the growth was almost entirely suppressed at a salt concentration of 7 per cent, the optimum being 0.5 per cent (see Fig. 3). 4. Na-, K-, Mg-, and Ca-salts as contained in sea water were necessary for the growth of marine bacteria in the basal medium but not for that of terrestrial forms, whereas Vibrio parahaemolyticus seemed to require NaCl for their normal growth (see Fig. 1 and Table 5). 5. All the strains were tested on their growth capacity in the following five types of media during six days’ incubation at 25°C. The media (pH 7.6) containd, common to all, 0.05 per cent of peptone and 0.01 per cent of yeast extract, which were dissolved in : (a) pure water, (b) 0.5 per cent NaCl solution, (c) 3 per cent NaCl solution, (d) Herbst’s artificial sea water diluted six-fold, and (e) Herbst’s artificial sea water. 6. Tested micro-organisms can be grouped into three from their growth capacity manifested in these media. One of them, which includes terrestrial bacteria, is characterized by the capacity to grow in every type of the media. Another group lacks in the capacity to grow in the (a) medium. The last one, to which the majority of marine bacteria belong, is characterized by incapability to grow in the media (a), (b), and (c) (see Tables 5 and 6). 7. Although organisms belonging to these three groups have been found in the sea, the writer believes that only the last-mentioned should be designated marine bacteria in the strict sense.
