| 内容記述 | In this paper, I examine sensory expressions used for depicting the characters, Beatrice or Giovanni, as a key to understanding "Rappaccini’s Daughter." In chapter 1, I analyze the text of "Rappaccini’s Daughter." Then I argue that, with those sensory expressions, the reader can perceive the story sensuously. Especially, I emphasize effects of the characters’ oral words and voices which help to maintain purity without being affected by the state of the body. In Chapter 2, I explore how Hawthorne was inspired by linguistic theories which are thought to have been the background of his writing. It turns out that oral expressions have the feature that they can unify the speaker and the listener easily. In chapter 3, I focus on the narrative structure which reminds the reader of a theater-style space and examine the way in which sensual aspects are transmitted effectively there. It seems that Beatrice’s integration with Giovanni is realized by resonance of her voices. However, ultimately, Giovanni’s doubt on the toxicity in her voice gets higher than the influence from her speech. This story reveals a linguistic view of Hawthorne, that is, the word depends on the bodily sense, but, furthermore, it reveals the possibility of words and voices expressing a pure spirit that transcends the physical. |

| 内容記述 | 「ラパチーニの娘」には，その文章に多様な感覚表現の描写を見ることができる。本論では，「ラパチーニの娘」を読み解く鍵として，ベアトリーチェやジョヴァンニの描写における感覚表現に着目する。 まず，第1章では，「ラパチーニの娘」のテクスト分析を行った。ベアトリーチェとジョヴァンニに関連する感覚表現について，視覚，聴覚，嗅覚，及び複数の感覚表現が混在する事例をそれぞれの表現ごとに挙げ，分析した。その結果，多様な感覚表現が単一で，あるいは混交され，ベアトリーチェやジョヴァンニの特質や感情を表現していた。そしてその表現により，読み手は物語を感覚的に捉えることができることがわかった。特に言葉・声には身体の状態に影響されることなく純粋性を保つ性質をみることができた。 第2章では，ホーソーンがこのような感覚表現を用いた背景となる言語理論を，文献から探った。その結果，話し言葉には，外部と内部，発話者と聴き手を一体化させ，発話者の心情が表れやすいという特徴があることがわかった。 第3章では，作品の舞台について着目し，そこでの感覚の伝わり方を検証した。劇場形式の舞台における物語の推移を分析した結果，音声による他者との一体性により，ベアトリーチェの声でジョヴァンニとの一体化が実現されたようにもみえた。しかしながら，最終的には一過性という音声の性質と，至近距離での他の感覚の明証性によって，毒性への疑念の方が上回る結果となっていた。 本作品は，ホーソーンの言語観，つまり言葉は声を伴い,聴覚すなわち身体感覚に依拠するものであるが，さらに，身体感覚を超越するような純粋な精神を表現する言葉・声の力の可能性と，それに基づく人間同士の信頼関係，及び人間と自然との一体性という可能性への視座が込められたものであろう。 |
