| 内容記述 | Sapir's Language : An Introduction to the Study of Speech (1921) is still appreciated and widely read all over the world as one of excellent manuals for the students of linguistics. However, despite its popularity, there is neither an introductory article concerning the general plan of Sapir's linguistic thought nor instructive guidebook for the students. This thesis is an attempt to clarify and explain Sapir's newly offered linguistic way of thinking particularly on the history of language unknown so far. Sapir's Language can be classified into five parts: fundamental principles (chaps.1 to 3), synchronic linguistics (chaps.4 to 6), historical linguistics (chaps.7 to 9), semiology (ch.10) and poetics (ch.11). This classification means that Sapir's Language is deliberately designed as a suggestive introduction to the modern inguistics including semiology and poetics. Sapir's deep insight condensed in Language is not easy to realize, because, paradoxically enough, the book is written in everyday English avoiding technical terminology and was dedicated “within the space of two months, using only a few hastily-scribed notes” (Mandelbaum, p. xi). In particular, chapter 9 “How Languages Influence Each Other (in reality, Sapir's revolutionary view on “borrowing”)” has to be taken particular notice. In the traditional historical linguistics, “borrowing” has been regarded as a subsidiary perspective in comparison with the most important “phonetic law”, but Sapir offered, in connection with borrowing, three unprecedented perspectives: the newly-discovered relation between “borrowing and drift”, “(historically) contrastive perspective” (Language, p. 219), and the Na-Dene linguistic family (ibid.), but taken no notice so far. The recently released hypothesis on the route of Homo sapiens after its departure from Africa and the distribution of Na-Dene linguistic family overlap each other. |

| 内容記述 | 今までにサピアのLanguageの全体構成を明らかにした記事はないようだが，全11章を各章の内容に従って，基本原理第1，2，3章，共時言語学第4，5，6章，歴史言語学第7，8，9章，記号論第10章と，詩学第11章に分類するとサピアのLanguageが現代でも言語学概論として十分通用する構成になっていることがわかる。ところが，サピアの計画は少なくとも現行版の10倍ほどの内容を1冊に詰め込んだために中身があまりにも濃縮されているうえに，短時日のうちに口述筆記されたままなのでサピアの意図は十分に理解されていない（Mandelbaum, p. xi）。本稿はLanguageの第9章「言語の相互影響」を中心にサピアの言語史研究の原理を明らかにする。 Languageが名著と評価されながら十分理解されていないのには内容にも原因がある。第1，2，3章と第4，5，6章はアメリカ構造言語学（共時言語学，記述言語学）の誕生と進展に貢献した内容であり，その創始者とされるサピアの真骨頂といえる内容であり，十分に理解されていると思われる。しかし，後半の第7，8，9章は歴史比較研究法を論じている。ところが，第一に，サピアの歴史言語学はフンボルト，ボアズなどの言語学の原理を背景に19世紀の印欧比較言語学の厳しい批判なので，印欧比較言語学を心得ておかないとサピアの意図がわからない。第二に，印欧比較言語学がヨーロッパの文字言語だけを対象とするのに反し，無文字言語のNa-Dene大語族を含めたまったく新しい普遍的な比較言語学を意図して書かれている。同じ歴史比較言語学といっても「【歴史的に見た】対照言語学的視点」など発想が根本的に異なるので印欧比較言語学のつもりで第7，8，9章を読んでも理解できない。第9章は単なる言語接触論ではなく言語史論の核心的な問題が高尚な文体で論じられている。第10，11章はそれぞれ「記号論」，「詩学」を意図して書かれている。時代を先取りしすぎているためにサピアの意図は現在でも理解されていない。最近明らかにされた，アフリカ出立後のホモ・サピエンスのアジア方面進出のルートはサピアの提唱になるNa-Dene 語族の分布と一致するという見解はサピア解釈に重要な意味を持つ。 |
