| 内容記述 | Phylogenetically, the evolutionary journey of mammalian dentition from the simple, single-cusped conical teeth seen in reptiles to the more complex multi-cusped tribosphenic molars in marsupial and placental mammals involved the gradual addition of new cusps. Ontogenetically, the intricate formation of these complex mammalian molars occurs through the dynamic interaction between the dental epithelium and the mesenchyme, particularly the interface area that will ultimately become the enamel-dentin junction. This interface becomes complex by adding signaling centers, enamel knots, which determine future cusp positions. A parallel relationship between ontogeny and phylogeny of the mammalian multi-cusped teeth has been expected. Meanwhile, the ‘premolar analogy theory’ proposes homology between certain premolar and molar cusps in humans, despite lacking substantive evidence to substantiate this claim. To shed light on these theories and concepts our study focused on the developmental process of multi-cusped teeth in the house shrew (Suncus murinus), a living placental mammal species with molar morphologies considered the least derived from the tribosphenic prototype among mammals. This research aimed to uncover the evolutionary origins of cusp formation and their relationship to development and to discover the homology of these cusps. The findings of this study were enlightening. The first formed enamel knots gave rise to the evolutionarily oldest cusps, the upper paracone and the lower protoconid. The order of enamel knot formation in development precisely followed the order of cusp appearance in evolution. The parallel relationship between ontogeny and phylogeny of mammalian molars suggests that some heterochronic changes during tooth morphogenesis should have been a causal factor in the evolutionary transformation of tooth morphology. Furthermore, the study unearthed a novel perspective on dental homology within the cusps of house shrew's dentition. The large buccal cusp of the premolar is homologous to the single cusp of the canine and mesiobuccal cusp (paracone) of the molar. Our result also suggested that molar morphology formed by duplicating the premolar morphogenetic process in the distal direction during the odontogenesis process. This concept underscores the intricacy of tooth development, offering a fresh perspective on the evolution of dental cusps. |
