| 内容記述 | Thirteen specimens (71.8–336.3 mm total length) of Uropterygius oligospondylus Chen, Randall, and Loh in Loh et al., 2008 were collected from Amami-oshima and Tokunoshima islands in the Amami Islands, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Uropterygius oligospondylus has previously been known from Japan, Taiwan, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, and in Japanese waters, the species has been recorded only from Minami-iwo-to island in the Ogasawara Islands. Thus, the Amami Islands specimens represent the first records of U. oligospondylus from the Ryukyu Islands and the northernmost records for the species. Although the number of tooth rows on jaws has been regarded as one of diagnostic characters to separate U. oligospondylus from Uropterygius sp. sensu Hatooka (2000) [= Uropterygius macrocephalus (Bleeker, 1864) sensu Loh et al., 2008], The number of tooth rows in the present Amami specimens was overlapped with that of Uropterygius sp. (viz., teeth on jaws biserial or triserial in U. oligospondylus vs. biserial in Uropterygius sp.). The ontogenetic changes of the number of teeth and tooth rows of U. oligospondylus were described in this study. Validity of other diagnostic characters for these species (vertebra number, notch above eye, teeth on vomer, and coloration) was confirmed during this study. In addition, habitat and food habit of U. oligospondylus in the Amami Islands were commented based on information on collection sites and the stomach contents of the present specimens, respectively. | |||||||||||||
