| 内容記述 | The Indo-West Pacific labrid genus Pteragogus Peters, 1855 includes 10 valid species, three of which having been recorded from Japanese waters. However, although a common species Pteragogus aurigarius (Richardson, 1845) has been recorded on the basis of numerous collected specimens, other two species have been recorded on the basis of only underwater photographs or as species name lists. Two male specimens (87.3 mm and 111.1 mm standard length) of the Cockerel Wrasse Pteragogus enneacanthus (Bleeker, 1853) were collected from the Osumi Islands, Japan in December 2014 and Octorber 2016. These specimens, described here in detail, possess the following characters: several white stripes on the lateral surface of the body, including on the lateral line, a white stripe with reddish margin from the snout to eye, small white and dark brown blotches on the lateral line, and an oblong black blotch margined with red at opercle. Review of literature showed that P. enneacanthus is distributed in the Osumi, Okinawa, Miyako, and Yaeyama islands in Japanese waters. The specimens from the Osumi Islands represent the first specimen-based records of P. enneacanthus from Japan, and a new standard Japanese name “Kitsune-ohagurobera” is proposed here for the species. | |||||||||||||
