| 内容記述 | L.T.ミードの小説『少女たちの世界』の寄宿学校において,シャーロット・ブロンテの著作『ジェイン・エア』は,学校内で決して読んではいけない本,すなわち禁書扱いを受けている。換言すれば,この小説をミードは,メタテクストとして『少女たちの世界』の読者に紹介しているのである。本稿では,作者ミードが自著の中で『ジェイン・エア』を取り上げた理由を考察し,ミードが描く女性の理想像を明確にする。第1章では,聖職者の娘として育ったブロンテとミードを比較し,キリスト教が両作品の主人公に与えた影響を検証する。第2章では,禁書扱いを受けてはいるものの,実はミードには,その裏に『ジェイン・エア』を読むようにと読者に促す意図があった,という観点に立ち,論を展開する。ブロンテが感じていた社会に対する怒りは,自活する道を探す必要に迫られたミードの時代の女性の,現状打破の突破口となる可能性を秘めている｡ミードは, 時代を切り開いて生きていく女性の模範としてこの本を推薦する気持ちを持っていたという可能性について述べる｡第3章では, 『少女たちの世界』におけるミードの創作方針を明らかにする｡ジプシーに似た少女を主人公とすることで, 外見より内面の美しさを備えた女性, いうなれば, 新しい女性の魅力を描き出そうとしたのである｡このことは, 『ジェイン・エア』の作者が描こうとしたヒロインの姿にも共通する｡内面の美しさと勇気で人生を切り開いていく女性を描いた『少女たちの世界』は, 当時の少女たちに受け入れられ, 人気を博した｡この新しいタイプの主人公は, 変化しつつある社会状況をたくましく勇敢に乗り切っていく｢ジェイン・エアの娘｣ともいうべき, 当時の女性の｢あらまほしき姿｣であることを本稿の結論とする｡ | |||||

| 内容記述 | This paper deals with the influence of Jane Eyre upon L.T. Meade's popular novel, A World of Girls. In the school in the story, Jane Eyre is banned, that is to say, the book has become a sort of a meta-text. By comparing these two novels, the reason why Meade took up Jane Eyre especially in her work comes to light. In Chapter 1, the effect of Christianity upon the formation of the heroine's personality is taken into consideration. Chapter 2 treats the meaning behind the banning of Jane Eyre being read in the school. Through the argument, the possibility that the ban has hidden implication becomes clear, which is, Meade's suggestion to the young girls that they should read Jane Eyre. Jane's strong individuality, passion and morality give the readers the courage to live through the time of "The Odd Women". Chapter 3 deals with the role of un-English characters of the gypsies in the novels. The ambiguity of their portrayal gives a complicated flavour to the stories. In conclusion, being "a daughter of Jane Eyre" is the ideal which Meade intended to show to her readers. |
