山体頂部は火山灰や火山ガスにより植生が後退し, 非常に荒廃した状態にある。新旧の火山噴出物からなる山体は侵食されやすく, 降雨時には土石流・出水により多量の土砂が流出して いる。著者らは桜島で発生している土石流・出水の特性を明らかにするとともに, それらによる流出土砂量を予測する ために, 北岳山体の西道川と南岳山体の有村川において土石流・出水の観測を開始した。観測システムは, 超音波式水位計による土石流・出水の水位観測, ビデオカメラによる動態観測, 転倒ます型雨量計による雨量観測からなる。本論では, 1991～1996年に得られた観測結果に基づき, 西道川および有村川の流出特性, 流出土砂量について検討する。得られた結果をまとめると次のようである。(1) 西道川と有村川における土石流・出水の流出時間は, 西道川1.4～16.6時間, 有村川0.2～6.6時間であり, 西道川は有村川に比べて流出時間が長い。ピーク流量は降雨条件が同程度でも西道川より有村川で大きく, その平均値は西道川9.2m^3/s, 有村川20.6m^3/sであった。一方, 総流出量は有村川より西道川で大きく, その平均値は西道川34,868m^3,有村川19,972m^3であった。これらは, 地形, 地質・地層構造, 地表面の状態, 侵食状況などの違いに関係している。(2) 西道川水位観測地点において出水のサンプルを採取し, その土砂濃度を測定した。その結果によれば, この場合の土砂濃度は流量の変化とよく対応し, 両者の関係は両対数方眼紙上で直線で表された。(3) 土砂濃度一流量曲線が, 1993,1996年の土石流・出水に適用されるものとして, 土砂流量のハイドログラフを求め, 個々の土石流・出水の流出土砂量を算出した。1993,1996年の4年間の比流出土砂量の平均値を求めると, 西道川流域16,344rピ/k丘, 有村川流域20,363rゴ/kdとなり, 比流出土砂量は西道川より有村川で大きい。(4) 土石流・出水による総流出量の合計から土砂流出量を差し引き, 雨水流出量を求めた。年流出率(年降水量に対する雨水流出量の比)は,
