| 内容記述 | This paper deals with the historical background to Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, the Victorian era. The first chapter looks at Jane Eyre and Imperial colonial policy. In Jane Eyre, people live in two important cities of the triangular trade of the empire having a great influence on the life of the heroine. The subject of this chapter is the relationship between the description in the novel and the real life of people. Next, the second chapter deals with the feeling of the British for foreign people. Through the description of foreign women, the virtue of Jane clearly comes to light. The social condition of Imperialism makes them appear as a foil to the English heroine. Finally in the third chapter, the view of marriage in the middle class is the subject matter. The social phenomenon "Odd Women" casts light on the history of the time. Because of the fact, marriage without the joy of love is not so unusual. Nevertheless it is clear that Jane's being "the Angel of the House" and her words, "...we are precisely suited in character; perfect concord is the result." are both the ideals of young women. | |||||

| 内容記述 | シャーロット・ブロンテによって1847年に世に出された『ジェイン・エア』は, たちまち評判となり, ヴィクトリア女王をはじめ, 多くの人々に読まれる名作となった｡ 架空の小説の中に, 当時の社会情勢や気運を的確にとらえて描き出したことも, 人気を博した一因である｡ 本稿の第１章では, 小説内の描写や登場人物の発言から, 当時の社会における植民地と宗主国の関係を取り上げる｡ ヴィクトリア朝イギリスと植民地との関係を通して, おもに男性の生き方という観点から作品を考察する｡ 次に, 第２章では, 女性達をめぐる発言から, ヴィクトリア時代中期のイギリスの女性や文化と, 他の国の女性や文化とを比較検討する｡それによって, 作者がこの記述にこめた考え方を探る｡ 対照的なこれらの描写から, 他の国の女性に対する当時のイギリスの人々の意識を作中から読み解くものである｡ 第３章では, ジェインを中心として, 中流階級の人々の結婚観について考察する｡小説の中で, ジェインは２人の男性との結婚を考える｡ジェインとロチェスター, ジェインとセント・ジョンという２組の関係は, 非常に対照的とも言える｡ この２人の男性の行動や考え方から, 当時の中流階級の結婚の姿がみえてくる｡ この時代の特徴である｢女余り現象｣を抱えるイギリスにおける女性の生き方という観点から, 結婚に的を絞り検証を加える｡ 主人公の生き方を貫く強固な意志や道徳心と共に, 情熱が読者の心をひきつけ, 最終的には｢家庭の天使｣という生き方を自らが選びとる様子は, 多くの女性が望む｢幸福な家庭｣への憧れを示している｡ これらの議論から見えてくるのは, ジェインが体現する｢ヴィクトリア朝イギリス女性 の理想像｣である｡ |
