内容記述 In the History of Japanese architecture, it's especially interesting that the period from the middle of 19th to the start of 20th century. An effort of learning European architectural engineering offered us entirely new direction. The main theme in the beginning was the technique of masonry, stone-worked and brick-worked architecture. On the time we had obtained it, the world stream was going to attend to the Steel construction and the Reinforced concrete construction. Therefore, the history of mason worked architecture in Japan have had a end of short life of itself. And in these days, there are about (less than) 180 stone-worked architecture remains in this nation. But in Kagoshima Prefecture, it was known that so many stone-worked constructions had been produced, five stone bridges and Shoko-shuseikan for example. Because of the existence of stone and stone mason, KAGOSHIMA PRISON was constructed in 1908. It was one of the most significant stone-worked architecture created in the last of this term and was unique prison made with stones. We had give attention to this architecture as an important one to describe the history of modern architecture in Japan, and also in Kagoshima. But we have had not enough oppotunities to investigate that buildings because it was actually in use. March in 1986, KAGOSHIMA PRISON had moved to Yoshimatsu Chou. We had a time to research into this architecture until it would be destroyed. This paper reports the process of construction and design method in §1 and in §2 the architect, Keijirou Yamashita whom we regard as a designer of KAGOSHIMA PRISON.
