内容記述 | The Philippines is the only Asian country with an overwhelming Catholic majority, comprising more than 85 per cent of its population of about 37 million (1970). Several studies on aspects of Philippine Catholicism (or folk Catholicism) have been published, however no overall ethnographic study of church-centered religious life at a specific community has yet to be done. The present study is an attempt to describe the structure of a rural parish, and annual-cycle religious ceremonies centered around the parish church. The field research for the present study was conducted at the Town of Majayjay (The Parish of St.Gregory the Great), Laguna, from October, 1980 to September, 1981. Catholics comprise 93.8 per cent of the town's population of 12,316 (1970). The geographical and demographic boundary of the parish is the same as that of the town. The parish has its own patron saint, St.Gregory the Great, church and parish priest. All of the church-centered religious activities except barrio fiesta are basically poblacion-limited affairs. This indicates that the barrio residents outside the poblacion generally have little concern with church-related affairs. They maintain more indigenous and traditional ways of expressing their belief. |

内容記述 | The population of the poblacion, composed of four barrio, and nearby areas in Majayjay, is about 7,000. They could be roughly classified into four groups according to their degree of participation in church-centered religious activities: (1) about 30 extremely active members composed of leading officers of the Parish Council and lay organizations, and extremely frequent church-goers, most notably women called manang, or devout Catholics who attend mass and novena almost everyday; (2) about 1,200 (including 30 of the above group) who attend mass once every week either on Saturday or Sunday; (3) people who participate only in special church activities during Christmas, Town Fiesta and Holy Week. The number of this group is estimated to be around 1,400; and (4) people who seldom or never participate in any church-centered religious activities. |

内容記述 | At present the parish has 11 lay organizations which are member organizations of the Parish Council. They vary in terms of recruitment, member-qualifications, program of activities, and the degree and scope of commitment to church affairs. Some of them like Samahang Pagkakaisa, Samahang Corazon de Jesus, and Samahang Damayan are only found in Majayjay while the rest were organized as branches of nation-wide or world-wide Catholic lay organizations. Several of them, being assigned to prepare for specific feasts and devotions, play an important role in mobilizing people to church-related activities. |

内容記述 | Since the leadership of the parish priest over the parish is quite limited due to the secularization of the society, several lay leaders most of whom are officers of the Parish Council, manage the parish. The parish currently faces a number of problems, the most serious of which are effects of the securalization trend among the parishioners, and the penetration of non-Catholic Christian churches into the parish, most notably, the Igelsia Ni Cristo. Against this background, and in accordance with recommendations provided by the reforming Second Vatican Council, lay leaders have attempted to re-establish what they consider a "true" Catholic community. These attempts are directed at (1) strengthening the role of the Parish Council; (2) re-evaluating various religious and/or church-related practices, and conscientizing the general Catholics in terms of the Gospel and their social commitment; and (4) holding regular mass at several barrio outside the poblacian where no mass have ever been heard regularly in order to expand opportunities for barrio residents to attend church-related ceremonies. |

内容記述 | The annual Catholic ceremonies observed in and around the church are prescribed and given respective meanings by the Ecclesiastical Calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. These ceremonies are in most part accepted as the community's socio-cultural events in which the community's identity is expressed. It was found out that activities of the Holy Week, Christmas and the Town Fiesta attract more people than any other occasions. Moreover non-official activities associated with the official Catholic ceremonies seem to attract more people than official ceremonies themselves. Examples of these non-official occasions are simbang-gabi, pabasa ng pasyon, Santakruzan and many others. |

内容記述 | The following three aspects were observed as distinctive characteristics of Filipino Catholics' religious life in and around the church; (1) Statue complex which is apparent in the forms of devotions, in various processions and at private houses where the statues of the family's patron saint, etc. are diplayed in the family altar. In many cases these statues are regarded as members of the family, and powerful beings who will help an individual in case assistance is needed; (2) Emphasis on Christ's birth and death. This shows that Christ is accepted basically as an innocent child, and as dying Christ. The resurrection of Christ and the succeeding Pentecostal affairs which are central to Catholicism are less significant to the majority of Filipino Catholics, if not totally neglected; and (3) Marian devotions which are popular among Catholics under the influences of Latin Catholicism are also prevalent in the Philippines. |
