内容記述 | This study, while using English writing classes during one semester period, presented a new pedagogical approach of teaching English writing processes and strategies to firstyear college learners in Japan. An educational purpose of using this approach was to help the students develop their character through selffocused materials and tasks in both their mother tongue (i.e., Japanese) and a foreign language (i.e., English). It aimed to have the learners acknowledge the importance of language use to describe themselves, including their sense of values, way of thinking, and college life goals. To this end, they were encouraged to work on the development of self-identity and maturity of spirit. Several unique materials and tasks, including the use of a Japanese book focusing on issues on contemporary Japanese college students, were employed so that the learners could identify their campus life and future liferelated problems and manage to solve them on their own. A final goal was to enable them to explain the change of their way of thinking, learning attitudes, and learning strategies with clear logic and solid content in one paragraph writing in English. A pedagogical challenge, therefore, was how successfully the author as the facilitator (not as the instructor) could motivate them to work on process-oriented, learner-centered, and self-regulated strategic language learning practices. Overall, positive results from several questionnaires were gained for this teaching method, including the employment of the Japanese book and self-reflective learning processes. It was also revealed that a self-focused language learning environment was useful in developing good selfstudy habits, such as home-based regular study hours and self-monitored learning practices. |
